I did enjoy this and thought the concept was really cool but I also thought it was trying a little too hard and it didn’t fully come together for me in the end

I am a fourth into this and fully obsessed with the world building already and the audiobook has a full cast that does a lot for me in terms of the characterization!

Intriguing tale about power, magic, connection and what to do when you're offered more than you'd ever imagined。 I raced through this, the narrative is fast paced and the characters are interesting enough to keep you hooked。 I look forward to more from this author。 (Copy received from Netgalley in return for an honest review)。 Intriguing tale about power, magic, connection and what to do when you're offered more than you'd ever imagined。 I raced through this, the narrative is fast paced and the characters are interesting enough to keep you hooked。 I look forward to more from this author。 (Copy received from Netgalley in return for an honest review)。 。。。more

An absolute tour de force of fantasy/sci fi/magical realism that surpasses all expectations。The blurb read as six gifted individuals get offered the chance of a lifetime but only 5 make it, and whilst that premise stays put, it happens in the most surprising of ways。 A story told from 6 points of view in only 372 pages is a challenge, but my god does Blake rise to it。 Can't wait for the next one! ⭐️3。5I definitely think the hype affected me on this one, don’t get me wrong I loved some of the characters, writing and especially the use of science and magic。 I just think it was sometimes too slow and the plot really (especially in comparison to the characters) lacked a lot of excitement and depth at times。 BUT I’m hoping now that all the ground work has been laid the second book is gonna knock it out the park so I’m excited to see how it turns out!

I just finished The Atlas Six。This book was awesome! If you're looking for something intriguing and thought provoking, look no further。 Magic, mystery, spice, this book has it all。 The first half was a little slow。 That said it was still interesting and very much necessary to really set things up and make you care about the characters and what was happening。 This story was set up beautifully。 I'm so invested。 Once it picked up, I couldn't put it down。 Highly recommend。 I can't wait to read more! I’ve loved Dark Academia before, & especially enjoy the intersection of Magic/Science - having seen it done especially well in 'The Name of the Wind'。 The promise of that in a new, YA setting was great。 Early on it felt like HP combined with Hunger Games & a bit of The Maze RunnerThe story unfolds as we're introduced to 6 Medeians, those who possess other-world talents & are not to be confused with a simple 'witch'。 We learn a little about these uniquely powerful individuals as they are approach I’ve loved Dark Academia before, & especially enjoy the intersection of Magic/Science - having seen it done especially well in 'The Name of the Wind'。 The promise of that in a new, YA setting was great。 Early on it felt like HP combined with Hunger Games & a bit of The Maze RunnerThe story unfolds as we're introduced to 6 Medeians, those who possess other-world talents & are not to be confused with a simple 'witch'。 We learn a little about these uniquely powerful individuals as they are approached by the mysterious Atlas to join the prestigious Alexandrian Society。 So prestigious that only 6 people are invited to be initiated, & only 5 will become members。There is no denying that the principle of the book is wonderful。 But as I think through the things that disappointed me, the delivery doesn't live up to the promise。The 'beginning' (chapter title) was fantastic, after having just read a drab murder mystery I was electrified by the prose。 "Many people incorrectly assume time to be a steady incline, a measured arc of growth & progress, but when history is written by the victors the narrative can often misinterpret that shape"Unfortunately my interest wasn't sustained that way。 The pace is turbulent。 I felt that the writing was constructed in a way that didn't lend itself to the subject。 The passage of time was poorly indicated。 There are occasions where the passing of 'months' is described, but there's been no significant action across that time。Group interaction & 'teaching' or world building dialogue was sparse, there's a void when it comes to telling their collective story as the characters aren't together enough。 This also means its hard to build up a mental picture of what happens at HQ; what it looks & feels like。It was confusing, & difficult to read。 Keeping up with people’s talents, their allies & opinions was hard。 There were sections I found refreshing amongst the negatives - in particular the section where Libby & Tristan come together to learn how their abilities can interact; they uncover that by working together they have the ability to challenge the concept of time。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, but I can see how it's not for everyone。 This is an intensely character driven dark academia book。 What action there is comes almost exclusively from the interpersonal relations of the six main characters and few other secondary characters。 There is no defined system of magic, and the world building in general is only a rough sketch。 The dialogue between characters is a bit pretentious, but it seemed accurate enough for a bunch of what are basically grad students stuck toget I enjoyed this book, but I can see how it's not for everyone。 This is an intensely character driven dark academia book。 What action there is comes almost exclusively from the interpersonal relations of the six main characters and few other secondary characters。 There is no defined system of magic, and the world building in general is only a rough sketch。 The dialogue between characters is a bit pretentious, but it seemed accurate enough for a bunch of what are basically grad students stuck together in a house。 I enjoyed the various plot twists, even though I saw most of them coming。TL;DR this is The Magicians meets The BachelorIn regards to the audiobook, I found it interesting that they used a different reader for each of the main POV characters。 This did help differentiate which character was talking, which I'm sure was the goal。 However, since so much of the story is dialogue, no one character had a consistent voice/accent throughout all of the six narrators。 The result was that it was harder to sink into the story: I was always aware that I was listening to an audiobook。 。。。more

An enjoyable read, even though the magic was kinda hard to understand。 This book consists of so many discussions and sometimes it was hard to follow。 But the characters are likeable! (at least to me)。

Flirted with giving this 5 stars for a while, so it was all down to how it stuck the landing。 Really great fantasy/dark academia with excellent characterisation and a well thought out magic system。 Loved loved loved Nico and Gideon, Libby's personality hit too close to home (in a sort of good way - I feel seen) and even Callum I found compelling even when he threatened to lurch into villainy。 I actually did like the ending, but got a bit of a sense that the plot was sagging under its own weight Flirted with giving this 5 stars for a while, so it was all down to how it stuck the landing。 Really great fantasy/dark academia with excellent characterisation and a well thought out magic system。 Loved loved loved Nico and Gideon, Libby's personality hit too close to home (in a sort of good way - I feel seen) and even Callum I found compelling even when he threatened to lurch into villainy。 I actually did like the ending, but got a bit of a sense that the plot was sagging under its own weight - too many moving parts brought in in the last 50 pages for anything to feel even vaguely resolved。I have no idea how much this changed between self-pub and the Tor edition, but I get the sense of an editor who was too frightened to red-pen the text too much。 Blake is clearly a really talented writer but she needs support from her editor to tighten things up。 Can't wait for the sequel though - I'm quite certain Olivie Blake has a five star book in her。 。。。more

the thing with this book for me is that all the individual parts were intriguing and amazingly conceived but they didn't quite seem to work together。 like instead of elevating each other they bogged each other down, a 5 sheep in a trenchcoat of a story if you will。 they didn't give each other room to breathe, almost making me wish I could free each individual storyline from the constraints of the others。 nevertheless I'm looking forward to where the sequel might take it the thing with this book for me is that all the individual parts were intriguing and amazingly conceived but they didn't quite seem to work together。 like instead of elevating each other they bogged each other down, a 5 sheep in a trenchcoat of a story if you will。 they didn't give each other room to breathe, almost making me wish I could free each individual storyline from the constraints of the others。 nevertheless I'm looking forward to where the sequel might take it 。。。more

This book kept me wondering what was going to happen until the end。 I wish overall that it felt less anti-intellectual and that there wasn't such a constant focus on power and money as the goal of education。 But it's fun! So I really struggled with what rating to give this but probably a 3。5。 We follow the 6 new magical recruits into The Alexandrian Society as they discover their purpose, new heights to their magic, what working together means, and who will make it to the end。 This book had soo much potential but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would。 The writing was good and I enjoyed the world and concept overall。 However……It was slow with a lot of repetition like how many times can you rephrase the sa So I really struggled with what rating to give this but probably a 3。5。 We follow the 6 new magical recruits into The Alexandrian Society as they discover their purpose, new heights to their magic, what working together means, and who will make it to the end。 This book had soo much potential but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would。 The writing was good and I enjoyed the world and concept overall。 However……It was slow with a lot of repetition like how many times can you rephrase the same stuff! The Atlas Six, a new novel by the prolific Olivia Blake (writing under Alexene Farol Follmuth), left me perplexed, and unsatisfied。 The whole was not the sum of its parts。 It had some wonderful parts。 I read a review copy of the book courtesy of the author, NetGalley and the Macmillian Publishing。 I’m sorry, I just didn’t like the book。The mysterious and secret Alexandrian Society recruits the six most talented, most powerful magicians once every ten years The positions are highly desirable。 For The Atlas Six, a new novel by the prolific Olivia Blake (writing under Alexene Farol Follmuth), left me perplexed, and unsatisfied。 The whole was not the sum of its parts。 It had some wonderful parts。 I read a review copy of the book courtesy of the author, NetGalley and the Macmillian Publishing。 I’m sorry, I just didn’t like the book。The mysterious and secret Alexandrian Society recruits the six most talented, most powerful magicians once every ten years The positions are highly desirable。 Fortunes can be made。 Dreams can be realized。 There is one tiny catch。 Of the six recruits, only five will survive to join the Society, and the recruits must do the choosing。The premise is intriguing。 The six young magicians are well fleshed out, but rather uninteresting。I lost interest in the book about a third of the way through when conversations delved into such sophomoric questions as the meaning of life, the nature of time and the universe, the existence of God, multiple simultaneous realities, and does anything really matter。 All the time allocate to these conversations and interior monologues could have been better spent on such topics as where were this six chosen; why does someone have to die (couldn’t they just have easily recruited five); what is the actual purpose of the society and what will the remaining five be required to do? What are the stakes???I will never have the answers, assuming there are answers, as I do not intend to read Part 2, except maybe out of morbid curiosity。 After reading some reviews, it seems I may be in the minority, as many readers regard the book as the second coming of the Messiah。 。。。more

3。5Great book, just not for me, which was disappointing as I was really looking forward to it。 The premise of a magical library and a contest of wits sounds so good。 And it is, just felt like it was trying to do too much with more characters than necessary, an overly complicated science-based magic system, and many plot twists that aren't fully explained。 I'm also pretty sick and not fully functioning brain wise, so maybe this wasn't the best time to read this?
